Frequently Asked Questions

What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional intelligence is the ability to:

  • Recognize, understand and manage our own emotions and;

  • Recognize, understand and influence the emotions of others.

In practical terms, this means being aware that emotions can drive our behavior and impact people (positively and negatively), and learning how to manage those emotions – both our own and others.

Managing emotions is especially important in situations when we are under pressure. For example, when we are…

  • Giving and receiving feedback

  • Meeting tight deadlines

  • Dealing with challenging relationships

  • Not having enough resources

Why is Emotional Intelligence important?

It’s a scientific fact that emotions precede thought. When emotions run high, they change the way our brains function…diminishing our cognitive abilities, decision-making powers, and even interpersonal skills. Understanding and managing our emotions (and the emotions of others) helps us to be more successful in both our personal and professional lives.

At a personal level, emotional intelligence helps us:

  • Have uncomfortable conversations without hurting feelings

  • Manage our emotions when stressed or feeling overwhelmed

  • Improve relationships with the people we care about

At work, emotional intelligence can help us:

  • Resolve conflicts

  • Coach and motivate others

  • Create a culture of collaboration

  • Build psychological safety within teams

What can Emotional Intelligence Coaching do for me?

Emotional Intelligence coaching gives you the behavioral and cognitive tools you need to unpack your own emotions in a way that allows you to productively process what you're feeling. If you can master your own emotions, your interpersonal activity will be more rewarding, through deeper connection with loved ones, better negotiating skills in business, and improved results in communicating ideas with stubborn people. Being able to read people, respond to their underlying emotional needs, and demonstrate empathy (even if you're not a naturally empathetic person) will open doors for you in all areas of your life. These skills are paramount in dealing with the difficult people and complicated situations life throws at us.

How do I know if I need Emotional Intelligence Coaching?

If you found your way to this page, you're probably not one of the lucky few with "Disney Princess" perfect relationships. Emotional Intelligence coaching is for you, if you often find yourself in conflict with others, getting overwhelmed or angry during interpersonal interactions, or if you frequently feel misunderstood, frustrated, and in conflict with people in your life. Not only will it help your relationships with others, it will also improve your awareness of yourself, giving you an enhanced ability to express yourself in a way that supports connection, without sacrificing authenticity or honesty.

I already have Emotional Intelligence, it's other people in my life that need help. Can this still help me?

YES! We all deal with difficult people, and developing higher EQ is something that can help us navigate those relationships. EQ is about more than just understanding and processing your emotions. It's also how we influence, communicate, and navigate sticky situations with others. By beefing up your EQ, you can also know that you're setting the best example possible for people in your life who may need help too.

I've never been coached before, how do I know if this is a good fit?

In our first session, we'll discuss your goals, your needs, and develop an actionable plan that works for you. I'm confident enough that I can help you, that if you are unsure about coaching, I'd like to invite you to schedule a free call with me, where we can find out first hand if this is a good fit. I don't want to work with someone who doesn't want to work with me, and you shouldn't work with someone you don't feel comfortable with. So as an act of good faith, head over to my contact page and let me know if you're interested in a preliminary consult call, before your first session.

How is this different from therapy or other kinds of life coaching?

Unlike many therapists and coaches, I'm not interested in keeping my clients for a lifetime. I want to get you results that help you break through areas in your life that have you feeling static or stuck, and give you actionable steps to improve your relationships and your emotional health, quickly. Through working with me, you'll develop new skills to be able to better connect, understand others in your life, and feel understood by those closest to you. I won't tell you how to feel, or what to do. Your success when we work together, is entirely up to you. Think of me as a guide, to help you get to the root of your own solutions, and a mentor in growth to check your blindspots and call you out when necessary.

What can I expect in my first session?

In your first session, we'll start by having a conversation about where you are in life, what you're struggling with, and what you hope to improve, within an identified time frame. Also in our first session, we'll go through an evaluation together to identify your EQ baseline, which is then broken down into 5 main categories. Based on your scores, we'll prioritize what you'd like to first improve, set new goals for growth moving forward, and you'll be assigned your first action steps to take in the week ahead. My intention is to set you up for noticeable changes in your life, as quickly as possible, starting with our very first session. Of course, deep and lasting change takes time, but after a first session with me, you should have at least a few new tools in your EQ toolbox to work with, while I design the action plan that we will implement in future sessions. Remember, your success in coaching depends largely on YOU. My job is to make the process as straitforward and concrete for you as possible.
